Yorkville University vs Thompson Rivers University: Which BBA Fits Working Professionals?

A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) can be just the thing to impact your career in a positive way, but which school offers the right degree for you?

Yorkville’s BBA is built for people who want a career-focused business degree on a faster, more flexible timeline. It offers four industry specializations, up to 60 transfer credits, and professional-body pathways.

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is a respected public school, and its BBA is a solid choice if you’re interested in a traditional route. This article compares the two on the factors that most affect working adults and career-changers.

Where Yorkville Wins

Speed and credit recognition

Yorkville can assess up to 60 transfer credits from eligible prior study, which can shorten the program considerably. Graduates of two-to-three-year college programs are considered for block transfer. The degree can be finished in as few as 2.5 years.

As with Yorkville, TRU’s BBA requires at least 60 credits completed at TRU. Its requirements also include 45 non-business credits and 51 upper-level credits, and the program notes that more than 120 credits may be needed. For a student with a diploma or years of college credit, Yorkville’s path is more direct.

Career-specific specializations

Yorkville students can choose a general BBA or specialize in Accounting, Energy Management, Project Management or Supply Chain Management. These are chosen for employer demand, not as broad academic majors.

Professional designations built in

  • Project Management PMP: The specialization aligns with PMI standards. One course meets the 23-hour education requirement for the CAPM exam, which students can write before graduating. Two courses meet the 35-hour requirement. Students then need 4,500 hours leading projects instead of 7,500.
  • CPA Canada: The BBA includes coursework that helps meet academic requirements for entry to the CPA PEP. Additional requirements apply after graduation.
  • Payroll and supply chain: The Canadian Payroll Association has approved credit transfer for certain BBA courses. By completing the BBA with a Specialization in Supply Chain Management with a grade of B or higher, you receive advanced standing towards five modules and two workshop courses of the CSCMP program.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM): By completing the BBA with a Specialization in Energy Management, you receive the equivalency of EMP 101 (Energy Management Professional) training in your record – a steppingstone towards the CEM designation and be recognized in CIET’s public Canadian Sustainable Energy Practitioner (CSEP) directory.

Why does this matter? Well, a BBA offers a pathway to a professional credential and gives students a tangible payoff that a general degree doesn’t.

Flexibility and campus options

Yorkville offers four start dates per year, and can be taken online or on campus. Domestic and international students face the same admission requirements.

As for programs and specializations, we offer a Bachelor of Business Administration (General), and with specializations in Accounting, Energy Management, Project Management and Supply Chain Management. These programs have received consent in British Columbia and are delivered on campus and online.

In Ontario, Yorkville University offers a Bachelor of Business Administration in Project Management (BBA PM) which is delivered on campus.

What Students Say

A CourseCompare reviewer called their time “one of the most transformative and fulfilling chapters of my life,” crediting Student Life events such as game nights and weekend hikes.

A graduating student on Google described it as “a fun and engaging experience from day one,” and said staff and faculty were approachable and helpful with course advice and career support.

Reddit users were more practical. One said success depends on staying organized and keeping up with coursework every week. Another liked the small class sizes, which they said support more focused learning.

An international student wrote that Yorkville offers affordability, quality education and recognition by Canadian professional bodies. These are Yorkville’s own curated selections. They show the culture, but they don’t replace independent research.

The Cost Question

TRU’s per-credit rate is lower. Open Learning averages about $183 per credit for BC residents and about $220 for Canadians living elsewhere. Yorkville’s $45,870 total covers 120 credits at $381 each.

Transfer credits change that comparison. At $381 per credit, each 30 transferred credits removes about $11,430 from Yorkville’s total. A student who transfers 60 credits pays for roughly 60 credits, or about $22,860 at the listed rate. They also reach the workforce sooner, which has its own financial value.

Which Should You Choose?

TRU suits students who prefer a public, traditional university environment, and don’t mind a longer path with more general requirements.

Choose Yorkville if you:

  • have a college diploma or prior credits you want counted
  • want to finish in as little as 2.5 years
  • are targeting project management, accounting, supply chain or energy roles
  • want a path toward CAPM, PMP, CPA, energy management or supply chain credentials
  • value small classes and an active student community
