Meet Biwash Gurung | Student Graduation Speaker for Yorkville’s 2025 Convocation in New Westminster

Biwash Gurung

When Biwash Gurung made the life-changing decision to move from India to Canada in pursuit of higher education, he was looking for more than just a degree – he was searching for direction, purpose, and a place to grow. He found all that and more at Yorkville University.

Now graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Project Management, Gurung has been named the Student Graduation Speaker for Yorkville’s 2025 convocation in New Westminster, BC – a recognition that reflects not only his academic achievements, but also the leadership, determination, and community spirit he has demonstrated throughout his journey.

In the following Q&A, Gurung reflects on what led him to Yorkville, how the experience has shaped him, and the lessons he’s carrying forward into the next chapter of his life.

What brought you to Yorkville University? Where were you in your life/career when you decided to continue your studies with us?

At a point in my life when I was seeking both personal development and a sense of purpose, I enrolled at Yorkville University. Several doors were opening for me immediately after graduating from high school, and I had to pick one. One of my choices was to study abroad, but that was no picnic either, due to all the other considerations. I finally decided to go to Canada for my bachelor’s degree, and my family and friends were supportive of my decision. I discovered Yorkville University while searching for a school that would help me establish a future that is in line with my goals and abilities. As someone juggling personal growth with adjusting to a new place, its career-focused, adaptable curriculum was ideal for my needs.

What made you decide to pursue your Bachelor of Business Administration in Project Management?

I have always found joy in coordinating the efforts of others and creating detailed plans, even as a young child. I always like taking the initiative, whether it was on the field of soccer, in a school event, or when we were planning a vacation. Therefore, Project Management seemed like the obvious choice for my area of expertise when I was seeking to narrow my focus. I figured my personality would be a perfect match there. My values and goals are congruent with those of leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. I want to become an effective leader in fast-paced settings, so I enrolled in this program to hone my technical abilities.

What is the most important thing you’re taking away from your studies at Yorkville?

I tell everyone that I have always been grateful to God for the positive people in my life who have inspired and driven me in their unique ways. Some of the most influential people in my life have been faculty, students, and mentors at Yorkville University. Their words of wisdom and counsel have been a constant source of motivation and inspiration. Despite my lack of familiarity with Canada and its culture, I was able to overcome my fears and grow stronger with the support of these wonderful people.

What are your plans after graduation, both immediate and long-term?

My immediate goal upon finishing college was to obtain relevant work experience in project management so that I could take charge of a team. It would be ideal to collaborate with teams in industries such as logistics, construction, or operations. I intend to learn more and improve my abilities in team building. In terms of the far-off future, I hope to return to school for graduate work at a prestigious institution after working for a few years.

If you offered one piece of advice to an incoming student, what would that be?

As I have experienced a lot of struggles in my initial days in Canada, one advice that I would like to give is to not stop dreaming, but also don’t stop doing it. Believe in your story, even when others can’t see the full picture. Because your journey, your why, is what will keep you going when things get tough.
